At the very beginning of the 5.66 kilometer long Ilica Street, at number 1, there is Ilica skyscraper, which makes an important part of the view of the main Zagreb square with its height. It was noted as the first business skyscraper in Croatian history.
Construction began 59 years ago, in 1957, and architects responsible for this project were Slobodan Jovičić, Josip Hitil and Ivan Žuljević, while the investors were famous companies Končar and Ferimport. The opening ceremony was held on August 22, 1959, and the skyscraper was opened by then mayor of Zagreb Većeslav Holjevac.
Apart from being the first business skyscraper in Croatia, Ilica skyscraper was also the highest business skyscraper in the whole Yugoslavia. It is 70 meters high, with 17 floors, and the last one was intended for the viewpoint, today called Zagreb 360 – a viewpoint Zagreb eye.
In 2007, the facade was restored by placing dark glass panels.
