Arheološki muzej se smatra jednim od izravnih nasljednika nekadašnjeg Narodnog muzeja, najstarije muzejske ustanove u Zagrebu. Narodni muzej je osnovan 1836. godine, a s javnim je djelovanjem započeo deset godina kasnije.
